If the port for vent isn't forwarded to your computer basically what your friend's does is try to connect to your IP address and it can't find the vent server because the port isn't pointed in the right direction, hence the reason for ports at all. If some of your players names show up as XXXXXXXX this means they have unchecked "Show login name in remote status requests" in their Ventrilo "Connection Editor" window. The server owner has the option to allow remote status scripts such as this one to display the users names and channel names etc.
